Art
Berke, his life, and work have been the subject of various artistic endeavours. Joe’s portrait has been captured in paint and clay. The South African painter and Kingsley Hall resident Harry Trevor (1922-1970) captured Joe’s physical and psychical energy in a monumental Expressionist portrait featuring the Star of David. The British sculptor David Annesley (b 1936) produced several busts of Berke in clay.
The American artist Carolee Schnemann (1939-2019) was a friend of Berke. She was one of only two women invited to participation in the Dialectics of Liberation event in 1967. This lack of female participation was much lamented by feminists. Her retrospective exhibition at the Barbican Centre in 2022, Body Politics referenced Berke’s key role in organising the 1967 event and inviting Schneemann’s participation.
Berke’s archive materials feature in the Blueprints for Studies exhibition at Zeppelin University, Germany (March-December 2024). This includes Antiuniversity catalogues and a letter that was part of the PET Archive. The latter was given to the Mulberry Trust by Berke.
